Review

Russia and its history always have fascinated me very much. That's why
I really wanted to read this novel. 

'Forget Russia' is written very fluently and has strong characters. It is nice to 
feel their emotions and the story - 

about how choices from the past have influences on your present -  

it will touch you very strongly! The book is written with lots of dialogues
that's why I give it a 4.5 rating on 5.

If you like stories about Russia and its history, don't hesitate to buy this book,
it's certainly worth to read. 

The Author

L. Bordetsky-Williams (aka Lisa Williams) grew up in New York City. She is also the author
of The Artist as Outsider in the Novels of Toni Morrison and Virginia Woolf
(Greenwood Press, 2000) and has been inspired by both of these towering authors. 

In 2005, she published a book of creative nonfiction, Letters to
Virginia Woolf (Hamilton Books). 

She is also a poet and has published three poetry chapbooks: 

Sky Studies (Finishing Line Press), 

The Eighth Phrase (Porkbelly Press), 

and In the Early Morning Calling (Finishing Line Press). 

She is a Professor of English and Literary Studies at  Ramapo College of New Jersey.

I was very willing to read "All Things Georgian" and luckily the book was available
as eBook on the Kobo reader. 

As a royal history lover, I really enjoyed the book very much. It was written very
 fluently in clear chapters and chronological as well (which is important for me).

There were stories about known and less-known people. I also liked the old pictures
in the book from inter alia London. 

So, don't hesitate to buy and to read this excellent book! I give it a 5 star rating
because due to interesting people and subjects, the layout of the book and their

fantastic writing style.

An excellent history book of Spain

Review

Every year, I like to travel to Spain. This country has lots of sunshine, food, drinks and history as well. Unfortunately in 2020, we will not travel to this wonderful country. So, I decided to read a book about the Spanish history. I was happy that I made this splendid decision. Reading books about beautiful destinations is almost as good as traveling in my mind.

The writing style is nice and clear. It also is written very chronological which I really like in history books. The facts and the most important events are told in a pleasant way. 

Even though I know already much about the history of Spain, I still learned many things from this book: "Spain: A History". 

The Author

Malveena McKendrick is an amazing author and historian as well. She also wrote a book about Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. 

Conclusion

If you want to read more about the history of Spain, don't hesitate to buy this book or to read it on Kobo as I did. I give it a 5 star rating!

Review

First of all: the black and white book cover already looks frightening and gives an excellent idea of the story. Anyway i liked the cover very much. 

The story itself also really is fantastic with unexpected twist and turns. I read it on a rainy lazy afternoon and it was certainly no disappointment. 

All the created characters are very great and well developed. The author must have done huge research work to create them. 

So, if you are a fan of mystery and exiting books, don't hesitate to read: "Animals We Are: Book Two: The Wolf & The Bee". I give it 4 stars on 5.

Recensie

Tuinieren is één van mijn grote hobby's, naast lezen en reizen (wat er nu in 2020 niet in zit). Ik ben samen met mijn echtgenoot vorig jaar verhuisd. De tuin (her)aanleggen naar onze zin , is één van onze top prioriteiten. Daarnaast willen we de tuin in huis halen door middel van planten. Daarom is een boek als "Een huis vol planten" heel leerzaam. 

Het boek is een hardcover, wat ik fantastisch vind, het neemt dan ook heel gemakkelijk in de hand. Ook de titelpagina is erg prachtig.

"Een huis vol planten" geeft omvangrijke informatie weer over het onderhoud en de perfecte keuze. Eigenlijk zou iedereen dit boek moeten meenemen wanneer hij of zij naar het tuincentrum gaat. 

Ik zal zelf dit boek nog vaak vastnemen en bestuderen. Daarom geef ik met veel plezier een vijf op vijf voor "Een huis vol planten". Het is zeker en vast een aanrader voor plantenliefhebbers!

De auteur

Met Mama Botanica wil ik iedereen inspireren om zich te omringen met planten. Ik ben Iris, opgegroeid in een urban jungle avant la lettre en heb ondanks mijn vele verhuizingen een enorme plantencollectie opgebouwd. Ik heb een plantenasiel opgericht en ben dagelijks met plantjes bezig. Het groeiproces van mijn planten registreer ik als Mama Botanica op mijn Instagram. Sinds een paar jaar geef ik workshops over het verzorgen en stekken van kamerplanten en plaats ik op YouTube video's met tips om je planten te verzorgen en te stekken. In 2019 kwam mijn eerste boek Stek je plant uit, waarvan er inmiddels meer dan 10.000 van zijn verkocht. Mijn tweede boek Een huis vol planten ligt vanaf 1 oktober in de winkels, met dank aan 1000 crowdfunders die het boek mede-mogelijk hebben gemaakt!

Recensie: Ma vie en rose

'Ma vie en rose' door Annemie Struyf

Omschrijving

'Neen, ik wilde geen sabbatjaar; ik wilde geen jaar in een hangmat gaan liggen. Wat wilde ik dan wel? Meer eenheid van tijd, plaats en ruimte. Ik wilde die warme droom onderzoeken die zovele anderen ook koesteren: ertussenuit knijpen, naar de zon, een jaar in Frankrijk. Geen files en volle agenda's meer. Vrijheid van komen en gaan. Natuur ook. En stilte. Minder stress. Zoiets.Dit boek bevat impressies van mijn tijd in Frankrijk. Gedachten en verhalen. Ontmoetingen ook met mensen die mijn leven in Frankrijk niet alleen keur, smaak en vorm hebben gegeven, maar bovenal: troost, afleiding, kracht en beschutting'.

Recensie

Na het lezen van 'Durf dromen' van Annemie Struyf besloot ik 'Ma vie en rose' te kopen en te lezen. Zoals altijd lagen mijn verwachtingen heel hoog. Toch werd ik zeker niet teleurgesteld want ik las het boek in één ruk uit. Natuurlijk is mijn persoonlijke mening geen maatstaf voor anderen. Daarom wil ik graag hieronder enkele argumenten weergeven, waarom ik 'Ma vie en rose' zo heerlijk vond. 

Eerst en vooral schrijft de auteur zoals ze denkt en praat: vlot. De korte stukjes lezen heel aangenaam maar geven de nodige diepgang.

Bovendien laat 'Ma vie en rose' je nadenken! Heb ik een grote droom en hoe kan ik die praktisch uitvoeren? De raad van de auteur is niet te nemen of te laten. 

Ik heb grote bewondering voor het werk van Annemie Struyf, maar omdat ze een gekend mediafiguur is, waar sowieso al veel reclame rond wordt gemaakt, blijf ik haar koppig een 4 sterren op 5 geven. 😛 

Twijfel echter niet om een boek of een ebook, zoals ik gedaan heb, van haar te kopen. Het is en blijft de moeite waard!

Bookreview: Let the Willows Weep

"A fantastic book, which made  me very emotional"

The Review

"Let the Willows Weep" was very emotional for me and together with the main character I fell a lot of feelings from anger to empathy and from love to hurt. It always very nice that a book can give you so much strong emotion, though it was a sad story. I'm sure - from now on - I 'll never look the same at a willow tree!

"Let the Willows Weep" was excellent written and it fell almost like I was reading poetry. So, beautiful! 

The author, Sherry Parnell did a great job. Check also her wonderful site on this link. I'm looking forward to read more of this author! 

On Goodreads, the book has a 3.95 on 5 rating, but I give her with lots of pleasure a 5 star rating!

Which are the most interesting book groups on Facebook?

Recently, perhaps a bit late, I downloaded the Kindle app from Amazon. With this special download I discovered the 'Free Kindle Books' group on Facebook. I didn't know that so much authors published their works for free! It's amazing and it offers hours of reading fun.

Besides the group 'Free Kindle Books' I also like the group 'We love Memoirs', which I learned to know through Twitter.

A third interesting group on Facebook is (in Dutch) 'Kobo plus lezers' for all the people who have a Kobo Plus reader and a subscription.  

I'm sure there are many more pages and groups on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as well. But for me, it's just very nice that so many people like to read! It also is very interesting to learn all different types of stories. It's obvious that one story you like more than another, but that's life!

In this blog post about interesting book groups on Facebook, I posted pictures of a real shop and my bookshelves at home. It is my wish to discover more interesting book shops online and in real life (hopefully after the Covid-19 period).

Heerlijk boek! 

Zelf dromend van een nieuw avontuur, heb ik ook de stap gezet naar een nieuw leven dat me nog elke dag bijzonder gelukkig stemt.
Waarom heb ik dit boek geschreven?
Om de lessen die ik de laatste jaren in mijn persoonlijk en professioneel leven geleerd heb, te kunnen doorgeven aan andere dromers. Want geloof me, dromen zijn géén bedrog. Ze moeten gewoon beter gekoesterd worden, ook in moeilijke tijden. Zolang mensen hun dromen blijven koesteren, is er hoop, is er een toekomst

Recensie

"Durf dromen" stond op m'n verlanglijstje om te kopen. Annemie Struyf is een
bekend mediafiguur in België. Ik kijk ook altijd graag naar haar reportages over
mensen die emigreren naar bv. Frankrijk en Spanje. 

Natuurlijk met een titel als "Durf dromen" en een auteur als Annemie Struyf zijn de 
verwachtingen heel hoog. Het boek voldoet daaraan ruimschoots. Ik moet dan ook 
eerlijk bekennen dat ik "Durf dromen" in één keer uitlas. 

"Durf dromen" is duidelijk geschreven in 12 hoofdstukken. Het is helemaal niet
zweverig of het springt ook niet van de hak op de tak. Kortom heel 
aangenaam om te lezen.

Technische details

"Durf dromen" werd gepubliceerd door Uitgeverij Lannoo en geschreven door 
Annemie Struyf. Zij schreef eerder al "Ma vie en Rose". 

Besluit

Voor "Durf dromen" geef ik met veel plezier een 4 op 5 als eindbeoordeling. 
Misschien ook wel omdat ik voor mediafiguren als Annemie Struyf strenger ben 😉

Toch heb ik dit boek heel graag gelezen!

"Under a skellig sky" is a nice story about green Ireland, its landscapes and its people. 

The book is written as the people speak in Ireland.

However "Under a skellig sky" is a very easy reading book. It also is a enjoyable story
so, I want to read more from this author. 

I give "Under a skellig sky" a 4 star rating (on 5).

Memoirs, who doesn't love them?! I certainly do, especially in times of Covid-19 and 

staycation. They give us new dreams. 

"Where the light begins" was certainly a very personal journey of the author to South-
East Asia. Although I've never been to those regions, it's now certainly on my wish list!

The book is written in short, clear chapters, which I like. It spoke about many 
interesting topics such as: relationship, love, loss, food, education, and much more.

I really want to know the end of the book!!

For all what I've written before about "Where the light begins", I  would 
recommend the book to friends.

Although I never read any other book of Christy Elmendorp - I think there are no other
books - I really want to read more work from her. She also has a beautiful website, check
this link.

I must admit I really enjoy reading great love stories, and this was certainly an excellent one! 

Although Tides of Desire by Tracy Summer is shorter than the other books of the series it has
the same ingredients: a wonderful location, setting, time and above all: excellent and strong characters.

After all 'Tides of Desire' written by Tracy Summer is a splendid love story to read during the Christmas Holidays. 

 

The Author

Award-winning author Tracy Sumner’s storytelling career began when she picked up a historical romance on a college beach trip, and she fondly blames LaVyrle Spencer for her obsession with the genre. She’s a recipient of the National Reader’s Choice, and her novels have been translated into Dutch, German, Portuguese and Spanish. Recensie

Toen er in Knack Weekend een artikel verscheen over het boek "Tuinieren voor de geest" van de auteur Sue Stuart-Smith  wou ik het meteen kopen. Psychologie en tuinieren zijn immers twee onderwerpen die me ontzettend boeien. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Meestal laat ik dan een boek wat rijpen, maar deze keer besloot ik om het e-book direct te lezen. 

'Tuinieren voor de geest' stelde me niet teleur, integendeel! De auteur hield een warme oproep om iedereen aan het tuinieren te krijgen. Het stelde diepzinnige vragen en deed me verder nadenken, niet enkel over de tuin maar ook over het leven. 

Het boek is heel duidelijk en boeiend geschreven in klare hoofdstukken, verdeeld over de cycli der seizoenen, wat wel zorgde voor een super goede indeling.

Soms stellen non-fictie boeken me teleur, maar deze was echt een schot in de roos! Het is zeker een aanrader voor mensen die houden van tuinieren, geschiedenis én psychologie.

First of all, I want to admit that I really love travel memoirs. My favourite countries are Spain and Portugal, but I can enjoy memoirs from other countries too. 

Janey de Nordwall immediately took me away in her book "From a wonky Path to an Open Road" on her journey to the amazing Scotland.

"From a Wonky Path to an Open Road" is written very fluently with short and clear chapters, which I really like. I wanted to know the complete story so I finished the book quickly. No I'm going to re-read it slowly. 

It was besides the travel a very inspirational book  I enjoyed "From a Wonky Path to an Open Road" a lot. So it's really a must-read!

Hoe ben je erop gekomen om dit boek te schrijven en wanneer?
In maart 2018 bladerde ik in een map  met dierbare post. Een daarvan was  het briefje dat mijn man in maart 2007 schreef na zijn bijna-doodervaring. Hij schreef:  ‘Opeens wist ik dat ik een kracht ontmoette die alles van mij wist en waarvan ik hoegenaamd alleen wist dan dat Hij/Zij de Eeuwige is. Het is een heel grote kracht die ervoor zorgt dat alles in orde komt. 2 maart 2007.’
Toen ik dat las, besefte ik dat inderdaad alles in orde gekomen was. Na zijn overlijden had ik de zin van mijn leven hervonden en was ik voor de tweede keer in mijn leven gelukkig getrouwd.  Op weg daarnaartoe was ik uit vele dalen geklommen.
 Dit dankzij een stemmetje dat af en toe in mijn leven opduikt om mij de weg te wijzen. Maar vooral ook dankzij de kracht in mezelf.  Je moet het zelf doen. Geloof en vertrouwen  in een hogere macht kan je wel rust geven om  de juiste stappen te zetten.  

 

Wat wil je zelf over het boek vertellen aan de mensen en aan je lezers?
Als journalist laat ik me raken door mens en maatschappij. Voor de allereerste versie van mijn uiteindelijke boek ‘’De Doorzetster: een ode aan de liefde’’  waren dat het briefje van Roel en de veranderende samenleving.
Met als titel ‘’Briefjes van Roel’’ schreef ik het vanuit de derde persoon, gaf mezelf een andere naam en legde de focus op diverse personen. Zelf speelde ik een beetje verstoppertje en Peter kwam nauwelijks voor in het verhaal. 

 

Hoe kijk je terug naar het verleden en was het boek hierbij een verwerkingsproces?
Eigenlijk had ik het liefst al met de eerste versie het romanachtige verhaal van nu geschreven. Ik schrok ervoor terug door de vele pijnpunten. Zoals het overlijden van Roel wegens een medische misser. Zoals ook de zware depressies van Peter.
Totdat ik besefte, dat deze verhalen anderen op weg  kunnen helpen. Al was het alleen maar om te laten zien dat je voor echte liefde nooit te oud bent. Peter werd geboren in 1935 en ik in 1952.  Dat  leidde tot  ‘’De Doorzetster: een ode aan de liefde.’’
Ik stelde Peter de ene vraag na de ander. Zowel hij als ik doken diep in onszelf en daarmee verwerkten we samen ons verdriet. Dat alles plaatste ik binnen de context van de veranderende samenleving.   
Sinds de lockdown zijn we 24 uur 7 dagen per week bij elkaar, Toch genieten we elke dag van elkaar.  Zoals Hilmar Mulder, hoofdredacteur van Libelle, het noemde: ‘’een verhaal waar de liefde voor het leven vanaf spat. En liefde doet leven.’’      

 

Wat was je doel met het schrijven van dit boek?
Met mijn boek ‘’De Doorzetster: een ode aan de liefde’’ wil ik de lezers  inzicht geven in liefde op latere leeftijd. Daartoe behoren ook  levensproblemen waarmee jong en oud mee te maken  kan. Wat kom je tegen, wat doet dat met je en hoe overwin je je dat?

Verder wil ik mensen inspireren om je door verdriet niet te laten verstarren, maar in beweging te komen.  Niet de omstandigheden bepalen je leven, maar de wijze waarop jij ermee omgaat.

 

Welke andere auteurs of dingen inspireren je?
Ik laat me inspireren door mensen en woorden die ik ontmoet op mijn levenspad. Van een klein kind tot een bejaarde. Van Bekende Nederlanders tot mensen in de supermarkt. Mijn inspiratiebron is, dat wat me raakt in het dagelijkse leven.

 

Wat zijn je toekomstplannen? In schrijven… (Was ik eigenlijk na het lezen van je boek heel nieuwsgierig naar).
- wekelijks een artikel schrijven voor mijn blog cultuurblogger.nl Hiervoor bezocht ik sinds maart 2014 elke week een museum, plaats, theater, of koninklijke bijeenkomst. Door corona kwam daaraan een eind. Vanuit de thuissituatie schrijf ik nu vooral over zingeving.  
- inmiddels liggen er vage plannen voor een nieuw boek. Dit krijgt vooral een maatschappelijke impact.  
- gastartikelen op websites n.a.v. thema’s in mijn boek ‘De Doorzetster: een ode aan de liefde’.
