Bookreview: Salford World War

Could World War 3 start in Salford?

What a page turner

Summary

1914 was the year that the First World War started. It was simple: a very
important person from a big country went to visit a small country and
got himself killed. Threats were issued. Tensions rose.

Now, one hundred years later, could the same thing happen again? Could
history repeat? What if the small place was Salford, not Serbia? What if
the dignitary was from China, not the kingdom of Austria-Hungary? Other
things are similar - the international tensions, the treaties, the posturing.

Luckily, this time we've got Melia. She's been asked by Captain Gibson to
organise security for the visit. She has only one task - keep the visitor alive.
That can't be so difficult, cant it?

Then there's Micky. For Melia he's always a problem, but this time he seems
even more problematical than usual. He's talking about retiring. Surely he
can stick around, for a while?

My review

What a page turner! I'm sorry I started reading this book so late, because it's
a fantastic one.

I really like the heroine, and the way the author has worked out its plot and
its story. It was told very well.

The book is written in clear chapters and read very easily. I  also want to
mention the good history knowledge of the author!

I would recommend this book to all who want to like to read crime thrillers.
And of course, I want to give a 5 * rating for this book.

Bookreview: Energy of Love

A How To Program To Self-Empowerment
and Self-Love

What an interesting read!

Summary

Energy of Love is an updated, new age book that is an actual "how to"
program to loving yourself. Self-Love is the absolute key to happiness
and giving love!

This is not egotistical love but a love that gives self-empowerment. The dynamics
of this book are unique because it shows you how science is profoundly linked
to spirituality and self-love.

Energy of Love will explicitly show you how science research now supports
that we indeed have a creator source of pure love and that love is the energy
that heals at the cellular level.

Energy of Love includes many new ideas and techniques that will take you
to self-love. It introduces a powerful new method to release past trauma, hurtful
emotions and forgiveness.  Don't let your past own you!

My Review

What an interesting read! I love to read books about psychological "stuff"
and I was pleasantly surprised by this work.

It was clearly written, easy to understand, and I also liked the layout of the
book.

I'm sure I'll re-read this book often to use some tips and tricks. That's why
I would like to recommend "Energy of Love" to anyone who is interested
in psychological matters, in changes and in self-help. It's not one of the
books.

I give with pleasure a 5 * rating!

The Author

Energy of Love is written by Susan J. Witt and it is an international winning
book and finalist in the category of self-help. In her mail to me she also told a bit
about her book, which I really like!

Bookreview: High and Low

How I hiked Away From Depression
Across Scotland

"What a fantastic read."

Summary

Keith Foskett refused to let his dark mood define his limitations. Unknowingly
suffering with depression, he took to hiking the wilds of Scotland to face his
inner demons. From the craggy Highlands of the Cape Wrath Trail and the
West Highland Way, to the canals criss-crossing the low country, 600 miles
of unforgiving hiking terrain called his name.

Keith repositioned his compass to what really matters in life. Pushing his
mind and body past breaking point, his journey could set a brave new course
coping with depression.

Battling ferocious weather, the ubiquitous Scottish midge, strange-sounding
local delicacies and substandard TV sets, this is one man's battle to conquer the
wilds of Scotland and his own psychological demons.

My Review

First of all: What a fantastic read.  The author tells in clear, short chapters
about his walks in Scotland. He also is very honest about his struggles in
his mind and in his body as well!

It read easily and it was written very well. I also loved the historical
knowledge of the author.

I recommend this book to all people who want to throw their struggle
away by walking. Therefore, I would like to give a 5 * rating for this
lovely book!

The author

Keith Foskett has hiked thousands of miles and holds a deep respect for
outdoor spaces of this world. Great Outdoors magazine shortlisted his book
for several awards, and his blog won the Go Outdoors best Blog award.

Author in the picture: Valerie Poore

Valerie Poore is the lovely author of many books mostly wonderful memoirs such as
Waloon Ways (about Belgium), Faring to France on a Shoe, African Ways and many
more.

Hallo Valerie or should I say Val?  (Val please!)

First of all thank you very much for participating in this small interview for
“My Crazy Life Full with Books.”

I’ve ‘met’ you via Lally Brown on Twitter and the We love memoirs group
on Facebook, but actually I ‘knew’ your boat earlier. During a visit to Rotterdam
in 2013, I took a picture of a beautiful boat called the Vereeniging.
Apparently this was the boat of Valerie Poore, which we both discovered in
2021.

Did you always have interest in living on a boat?

Kathleen, firstly, may I thank you very much for inviting me to your blog.
I’m so pleased to be featured here. And I think it’s lovely that you took a
photo of my barge long before we ‘met’ each other.

As for whether I was always interested in living on a boat, the answer is no.
In all honesty, I never thought of it until I came to the Netherlands.
I used to live in South Africa, which is a very dry country with virtually
no natural surface water. It was a great surprise to me to find people
living on barges here and travelling throughout Europe and I fell totally
in love with the whole idea.

You’ve a fantastic knowledge of Geography (inter alia the rivers,
the locks of a country) Was that always one of your interests
and do you have other interests too (besides writing of course)?

I’ve always liked maps and looking up routes and places to go, so
I suppose you could say I’ve just transferred that interest to the waterways
since I’ve been here. Now I love poring over the charts and seeing which rivers
and canals go where and how many locks there are. That can keep me absorbed
for hours. As for my other interests, well, I have quite a few. I love history and
went on some archaeological digs when I was young, and of course, I love
reading which helps with the history too. Besides these, I like woodwork and
making and restoring furniture, and I also like walking, photography and dogs.
Well, all animals actually, but especially dogs. I really miss having a dog and am
looking for one now.

How do you start living on a boat? I think by selecting a proper boat.
But how do chose the boat of your dreams?

Oh Kathleen, I have no idea how you should select a boat. You could
say that mine chose me because of her name. I saw my Vereeniging and
knew she had to be my barge. Vereeniging is the name of a town on the
Vaal river in South Africa where I used to go quite often for my work.
I loved sitting on the banks there, eating my lunch and reading and I
was very fond of the town. When someone showed me photos of the barge,
Vereeniging, I knew she was meant to be mine. It helped that I loved her
design as well and knew I could convert her into a special home

How could you describe your life on board?

My life is quite simple. I have everything I need but nothing more. That
means I have a small kitchen and a bathroom as well as a living area,
a work area and bed, but that’s all there is. There’s no room for anything
extra, so I have no TV, no music system and no dining table. I have
books (of course) and a table for my computer, but all the rest of the
space is dedicated to my tools, my water tanks, the engine room and
some storage space for other boaty stuff. It teaches you not to hoard
or collect too many possessions, which I quite like.

You travelled a lot with your boat, what lock complex is the most
complicated and or beautiful?

Wow, that’s a good question, Kathleen. Locks come in so many shapes
and sizes, but that said, I think the most complex lock systems I’ve been
through have been in Belgium. If you count the big lifts as locks, there
is the incredible 73-metre barge lift a Strèpy Thieu. Then there is the
amazing Inclined Plane at Ronquières where you trundle downhill in
the lock basin, which is a huge bath on wheels. After Ronquières,
you come to the second deepest lock in Belgium at Ittre. It’s 14 metres
deep and very impressive. Ittre is also very beautiful, but then so is Strèpy.
Actually, all of Belgium is beautiful. I love it.

Is it a dream to live all the time on a boat?

Ah, Kathleen, I’ve lived that dream already. I lived full-time on
board for eight years. Then in 2008, I bought a cottage in the country
to get away from the city noise. I started going there at weekends, but
I was still on the boat more than on land. Since the Corona crisis started,
I’ve been at the cottage more than on my barge, simply because it’s easier
to keep away from people, but I expect I’ll go back to a sort of half-and-half
life on board when things open up again. In the summer, we hope to go away
on the boat and then we’ll be living on board full time for two to three months.

You’ve lived inter alia in England, South Africa and The Netherlands.
Are there similarities between the countries for ex. People,
habits …. Or totally not?

That’s a good question. I’d actually say they are all completely different
and surprisingly so. Even though the majority of South Africans speak
English as their main language, the people are quite different from the English.
They are very spontaneous and enthusiastic by nature.

English people are polite and very friendly but tend to be more reserved
and less demonstrative. The Dutch are different again, but I found it very
easy to adapt to life in the Netherlands. I like the honesty and matter of fact
nature of Dutch people, but if I had to choose where to live, I’d move to Belgium.
I love the countryside and waterways there. I also find the people charming
and friendly and I adore Gent. It’s my favourite city in Europe.

(It's one of my favourite ones too :-) )

Where do you get your inspiration to write your books?

Ah, Kathleen, that’s an easy question for someone who likes people watching.
It’s the people, the places and the very differences I’ve talked about that give me
the inspiration. I’ve been so lucky to have had so many great experiences in
different countries. That’s all the inspiration I need.

You’ve written wonderful memoirs. But what was the most
remarkable event that happened in your life?

Now, that’s much more difficult to decide. Apart from having my
children, a single event would be impossible to come up with. I had some
incredible experiences in South Africa, which make it even harder to choose.
However, I would say that the first long trip my partner, Koos, and I did by boat in
2016 is probably the event I will treasure forever. It was just magical.
We had two more wonderful summers in 2017 and 2018 that were longer
and just as lovely, but 2016 was the first time we’d been away for more
than a couple of weeks, so it will remain the most special.

Lots of people dream of winning the lottery. What would you do
when you would win the lottery?

You know I’ve never thought about that in any real sense. I really don’t know.
I’d probably give most of it away but depending on how much it was,
I might buy a cottage somewhere warm where I could spend the cold
winter months. I really, really hate the cold, so I’d probably do that.
Or, make sure I could spend European winters back in South Africa,
because I do miss it very much. Perhaps I should buy my cottage there!

My native language is Dutch, however most of the time
I speak and write in English. Do you speak Dutch? Was it difficult to learn?

I read and write Dutch quite well, but yes, it’s a difficult language for someone
who learned French at school and not a Germanic language.
My biggest problem is listening as Dutch people tend to speak quite fast.
When they slow down, I can understand almost everything, and then I can speak
to them just fine. But, anyone who knows me will tell you they recognise the
blank look on my face when my Dutch friends are speaking too fast.
And I still make hilarious mistakes when I’ve misunderstood something.
There are so many words that sound similar it’s far too easy to mis-hear them!

I always end with the same question. What are your plans and
wishes for 2021 both personal and for the world?

Ah, Kathleen, I’m hesitant about making plans right now, but my personal
wishes are to cast off the ropes and go cruising in my beloved Belgium and
northern France again. I do so hope we’ll be able to do that this year.
And while we’re on wishes, I’d love to be able to go to Portugal or South Africa
next winter and do some more European travelling during the spring and autumn.
That’s a big wish list, I know. As for the world? Well, it would be great it if the
Covid virus lost its grip on us all and we could return to a normal state of existence.
It would be so lovely to get it out of the conversation.
That’s a very big wish, I know, but I look back to the time before Covid and
feel very nostalgic about how carefree we were then in so many ways. We could
then talk about other things that are important, but they seem to have gone by the
wayside since last February.

Bookreview: Downtime Shift

 A nice science fiction story!

Summary

From her hiding place in Downtime, Evelyn Marcin risks her fugity
anonymity for a curious glimpse of the next shift.

What she witnesses sparks a chain of events a journey that could
decide humanity's fate.

Helped by mysterious allies she unpics her old reality, uncovering the
self-interested manipulations of her superiors - and the real origin and purpose
of the echo loop.

Questioning their motives and beliefs though, she must also question
her own.

Her place in history is unwanted, inescapable and inevitable - like the
choice that has fallen to her.

My review

The book cover looked very colourful and promising so I wanted to
read this science fiction story.

I  really loved the concept and the idea of the book, however
I do like structured stories very much, due to
the time traveling from the 21st. till the 19th. century it wasn't always
clear.

I would recommend this book to science fiction fans and I give it
a 4 star rating.

Valentine special: When two writers found their love

Writers in the picture:

💕 Albert van der Steeg and Sarah Anne Burns 💕

Albert van der Steeg and Sarah Anne Burns are currently writing on a lovely
continuing story: Arjan and Sophie, which I really enjoy reading. You can read
it on this link

To my modest opinion they are a wonderful writing couple and one of the few
who actually work together.

As people (or perhaps the shops) around the world are celebrating
Saint Valentine, it looked a great idea to put this amazing writing couple in
the picture.

A special love story

How did you meet each other?

We were both on a website called MySpace (it actually still has the same name).
In those times, MySpace was what Facebook nowadays is. I started a group with
the name Planet Al. It was meant for people with the names: albert, Alfreds etc.

One day, a jazz/blues singer Albert Cooper took part of the group. He was a nice
guy but he had lots of pretention. For example he talked about Karl Marks.

Sarah had lots of fun with that guy and he became very angry. Finally I (Albert)
had to calm down them, but the contact between me and Sarah was there.

After lots of messages on MySpace, I gave her my e-mail Address. E-mails
followed and finally we made a phone call to each other.

We met each other live at the end of October 2007 and in December we
decided to marry. In January 2008 our wedding took place.

However I was divorced from my first wife in September 2007 and
everyone was against my second marriage. They found me crazy.
(Most people didn't know how long a divorce arrangement lasts).

Now it is 2021 and we are still very happy with each other!

How well do you know Sarah?

How well does Sarah know Albert?

Is there a difference of age between you two?

There is a difference of 6 years between us.

Which are your favourite stories?

We both love true stories. We don't like fantasy or science fiction very much.
If you read the story of Arjan and Sophie, you'll see that everything what's
happening could be possible. We both don't like fake things.

What are your favourite drinks and meals?

Sarah's favourite drink is Hopback Summer Lightning, mine is Westmalle
Dubbel. (Ha! As a Belgian, I say: Great Choice Albert!)

We both like Curry.

About their writing life

When did you start writing?

I (Albert) already wrote at the years of 11 and 12. I wrote at school. All the
kids had to work a week, before their job was finished. I did it every
Saturday morning.

Sarah already wrote stories for the school paper, Essays on the university and
she wrote for the Norfolk Nips, this is a magazine for brewers and beer lovers
in Norfolk (which is a county in the UK.)

Are there similarities between Arjan and Sophie and you both?

Only the nationality of both main characters and some own experiences
are the same as us. But they are very different than we.

Do you have a special writing routine or is it going with the flow?

At the beginning we wanted to write each one chapter, but that plan was
soon declined. It depends how we feel. Some days one of us writes more
than the other. We don't know yet what will happen to the story.

You write lots of posts about music. Which is your favourite kind of music
during writing?

It depends on the mood. Sometimes there is only silence. I Just discovered a
Dutch band Solution again. It isn't existing anymore.

Do you and Sarah have lots of writing dreams/goals?

Not really. We are already very happy with the amounts of readers we get
online. Publishing will only happen after winning the lottery, I fear.
We are both working on other projects as well!

Tell me, I'm very curious 😃

Sarah writes a novel and I'm working on my detective stories. If I get
inspiration I will write more very short stories. Sarah has some short
stories in her head that need to be written. And we both write reviews
as well.

Do you have wishes for 2021 - both personal and for the world?

We both want our vaccines soon, so life can be 'normal' again.
We also hope that all people on earth wouldn't believe nonsensical
things anymore and that everyone will respect the other.

That's a wonderful wish! Thank you Albert & Sarah , for this small
interview.
I wish you bot lots of luck and happiness.

My Review

From time to time, I enjoy reading a thriller and the author again didn't let
me down.

Primed for Revenge is the first book in these wonderful psychological thriller

It is a fantastic mix between storytelling and dialogues, which I really like!
It is written very clear, easy reading and with great characters. I absolutely
wanted to know the end of the story so I read it twice :-)

I would recommend "Primed for Revenge" to all people who enjoy reading

Twitter is a fantastic place to meet and chat to fantastic authors such as
Carolyn M.Bowen. After reviewing her thriller: One (see on this link), I
absolutely wanted to read more books from her. I also already knew
from the beginning that I would write an Author in the picture blogpost
about her.

So, enjoy the author in the picture blogpost of the briliant author:
Carolyn M. Bowen.

Author in the picture: Meet Carolyn M. Bowen

How did you start writing? Did you always want to become an author?

Thanks for asking. I knew I was a writer from an early age. My first short story
was published when I was fourteen. I've continued writing and studying the
craft over the years to become skilled doing something I love. It's a never-ending
process of reflection and discipline to produce new novels.

Do you have other work besides writing? Or did you do other work before
you started writing?

I am a full-time writer and life-long learner about the art and craft of producing
quality books.

Which is your favorite type of weather for writing and why?

I love all the seasons in the year. The burst of creative energy
I experience fits the mood for the settings I create.

Which is your favorite place on earth and why?

My favorite place is the beach, specifically the beaches of NW Florida.
The crystal white sand and the pale turquoise gulf is a great place to relax
and recharge mentally and physically. The soothing movement of the waves
tapping the shoreline in mesmerizing harmony is therapeutic.

I've found that whether people live there full time or are just visiting, they
seem to have a different way of going about their day when proximity to
the ocean is a variable. For me, I like my toes in the water.

I've read some wonderful thrillers of yours. Do you like/write other
genres too?

I mostly write mystery-thrillers. However, I've written a historical romance novel,
Cross-Ties, and a personal development book, Cross-stepping Your Way to Success.

Do you prefer to write alone or in company?

I prefer to write alone in a quiet preferably scenic location.

Do you have a fixed daily writing schedule?

Yes, I write daily. I get up when my tuxedo cat [Tooker] feels the need to eat,
which ranges from 4 to 5 A.M. He sits on my arms as I go through my morning
ritual of checking social media, then he sulks when I have to shoo him away as
I work on my novels.

Where do you get your inspiration from besides traveling?

Travel is my muse but with the pandemic I've been sidelined.
I'm interested in world affairs particularly those with the potential
to destroy mankind like climate change.

Do you like to listen to music or watch television while working?

You could hear the crickets chirping with the silence I find works best
for me. I enjoy being alone with my thoughts during the writing process.

What are your plans and wishes for 2021 and the nearby future?

I'd love to complete a new mystery-thriller series in the near future.
I'm excited about what comes next!

Thank you!

Thank you very much for particpating in these questions and answers,

My Review

Psychology and especially Industrial and Organization Psychology
interest me very much, that's why I wanted to read Stop Depriving
the World of You written by a real coach:  Darlene Corbett.

While reading this book, I felt that the author wasn't just telling a story,
it was written very clear with lots of experience and knowledge. She
explains this with the unstuck theory.

I liked the clear chapters and the interesting examples, just as the
quotes she used.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to move forward
in his or her life. It is with lots of pleasure, I give Stop Depriving
the World of You a 5 star rating!
