"Very informative"

My review

I received a free copy of  'Why We Are Coming' on October 27th. via Booktasters
and the author Yasin Kakande as well, in return of my honest review.

However it took a while for me, reading this complete masterwork it was really
interesting. The author also did a fantastic research as well. The theme: mass
migration is very actual too. 

As I said before, it took a while for reading, due to the facts, the figures and it
made me thinking. 

So if you are interested in history, Africa, slavery (now and in history),
colonialism, international politics, please do certainly read this fantastic book! 

Without any doubt I give 5 stars for this wonderful work!

It was fun to read this book.

My review

It was fun to read this wonderful book! It's a splendid mix between
sciences and personal stories. 

The book gives new views about how to use music well. I think I'll
listen to some playlists now :-)

Anyway, I enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend this
to all people who love music.

I give a 5 star rating for this pleasure read.

My Review

In my spare time, I recently started to study Industrial and Organizational
psychology, so this book "The Incredible Value of Employee Power:

unleashed How to gain competitive advantage by treating your employees
well!", interested me immediately. However I had a slight problem with the
long title. 

The book is written very clear and it has a good division into all paragraphs
and chapters. It also has excellent diagrams for clarification. 

I hope that more and more managers will read this book because employee
power is so important for businesses and organization. It's so logical that
a happy employee will produce more things and will be better for the 
organization. 

Therefore I would certainly recommend this book to all the managers or
to people who are - just as I do - interested in Industrial and Organization
psychology I would like to give this book a 5 star rating on 5.  

The Author

Robertson Hunter Stewart’s experience as an employee has now
stretched over a period of 36 years (56-years-old at the time of writing)
and he has spent the last 26 years in the service sector. Arriving in France
in 1992 (and speaking no French), Stewart worked his way up from cleaner
to General Manager of some of the biggest Luxury Hotels in Europe
(three of which with over a thousand rooms). He has led teams from a
few to several hundred during his career.

He also continues to teach in both French and English at Bachelors
and Masters Level for prestigious Management schools in Paris, France.

I really hope to read more excellent management books from Robertson Hunter
Stewart! I think people can learn a lot from him!

My Review

Sun, sea, beach and an amazing beautiful diving place. I've never been to 
Bonaire before. But after reading this book, I'm more convinced to go and
I would like to have Andrew Jalbert as a guide. 

The book "Back on Bonaire" is written very well: clearly and with lots of
humour. 

"Back on Bonaire" is fit for people who like to learn from experiences from
others. I certainly will recommend this book to friends, colleagues and family.
I like to give it a 5 star rating on 5 and even more. 

The Author

Andrew Jalbert is an award-winning photographer, writer, and doting father.
Throughout his twenty-five years as an archaeologist, scuba instructor and dive
guide he has traveled extensively, publishing work on prehistoric sites,
shipwrecks, travel, dive safety, and marine conservation. Jalbert lives in Monona,
Wisconsin with his wife Becky and their son Luc.

Recensie: Het geheim van Silicon Valley

"Een uiterst interessant boek met veel tips over management."

Samenvatting

Silicon Valley is veel meer dan de thuislocatie van de machtigste
bedrijven ter wereld. Het is een bruisende plek waar de constante
drang naar innovatie alles bepaalt, groots denken de norm is en 
startups uitgroeien tot miljardenimperiums. Wat is hier gaande?
Wat kun jij leren van de ondernemers uit de Valley?

Mijn recensie

De veelbelovende titel "Het Geheim van Silicon Valley", het 
voorwoord van Constantijn van Oranje én de mooie 
recensies deden me beslissen om het boek te kopen.

Ik vond het wel een beetje grappig dat twee auteurs die schreven
over innovatie nog een 'echt' boek hadden gemaakt ipv een 
E-book. 

Toch toonde "Het Geheim van Silicon Valley" me nieuwe 
inzichten en leerde het me termen waar ik nog nooit van had gehoord
zoals bv het pay it forward principe en veel meer. 

Ik bleef echter een klein beetje op m'n honger zitten omdat 
het vooral vanuit Nederlands standpunt werd geschreven. Ik had het
boek misschien nog iets internationaler verwacht zeker omdat 
Eva Schram ook voor Knack.be werkt.

Twijfel echter niet om het boek "Het Geheim van Silicon Valley"
te kopen. Ik zal het nog vaak vastnemen. 

Daarom geef ik dan ook graag een 4 sterren beoordeling op 5. 

De auteurs

Het boek werd door twee auteurs geschreven.

Wibe Wagemans is een pionier, serial entrepreneur en CEO in de Valley. 
Als eerste bouwde hij een AI-bot en een online videogame op mobiel.
Hij werkte bij Angry Birds, Big Fish, Huuuge en vele andere. Hij kreeg
de Cannes Golden Lion-award, het wereldrecord nummer 1- hits in de 
App Store en talloze exits. Wibe runde eveneens een business van 1 
miljard euro bij Nokia. Hij was expat en student in zes landen. 

Eva Schram is een Nederlandse journalist die woont in de San Francisco 
Bay Area en werkt als VS-correspondent voor onder andere het
Financieele Dagblad en het Vlaamse Knack.be. Haar focus ligt op de grote 
techbedrijven en diversiteit in Silicon Valley. Voorheen was Eva 
hoofdredacteur van Saragossa en onderzoeksjournalist bij OneWorld.

Mijn recensie

Er zijn niet veel boeken, die me zoveel dingen laten noteren

als "Happy Life 365".  De auteur gaf me heel wat tips en tricks om 

te gebruiken, zelfs dagelijks. Daarom is het
een boek om vaak vast te nemen en te herlezen. 

Ik heb dan ook nieuwe inzichten gekregen
zoals op een andere manier naar de dingen kijken of 

minder verwachtingen hebben, want
ik denk dat de meesten de lat super hoog leggen.

De eenvoudige, toegankelijke én bovenal positieve schrijfstijl 

maken "Happy Life 365" 
erg bijzonder. 

Tot slotte raad ik het boek "Happy Life 365" met veel plezier 

aan bij vrienden, collega's en kennissen. 

Als iedereen probeert de tips en tricks van Kelly Weekers te hanteren 

wordt het leven zo veel mooier. 

Ik geef dan ook graag een beoordeling van 5 sterren op 5.

Recensie: God Save The Queen

Samenvatting

Al meer dan vijfenzestig jaar zit Queen Elizabeth op de Britse troon en inmiddels

Ze stond te midden van grote historische gebeurtenissen en maatschappelijke
ontwikkelingen en werkte met grote namen uit de geschiedenis, zoals

troonopvolger en rustte er druk vanuit de hele wereld op haar schouders.
Queen Elizabeth heeft voor grote beslissingen gestaan en moest kiezen tussen

zien veranderen toen de dekolonisatie van het Britse rijk een onomkeerbaar feit

typerend, maar verder weten we eigenlijk weinig van haar. Ze is even bekend als
ondoorgrondelijk. Het koningshuis geeft niets weg van wat er zich binnen de
muren van het paleis afspeelt, terwijl de tabloids elke dag wel koninklijk nieuws
brengen. Tien vrouwen delen hun visie op de onverwoestbare Queen Elizabeth.
Ze brengen in kaart wat ze ons leert over de recente Europese en wereldgeschiedenis,
wat haar zo indrukwekkend maakt en in hoeverre ze een rolmodel voor ons is.

Recensie

Toen de Vlaamse krant 'Het Nieuwsblad' een nieuw boek voorstelde over
Koningin Elisabeth II van Groot Brittannië twijfelde ik geen moment. Ik wou
het onmiddellijk lezen. Ik was dus heel verrast dat het eBook - uitgebracht in 
oktober 2020 - al via Koboplus beschikbaar was. 

Het boek 'God Save The Queen' las ik in één ruk uit omdat de schrijfstijl vlot
en aangenaam is. Het lijkt een beetje op een goede roman. 

Er worden een pak uiteenlopende onderwerpen aangesneden, maar verwacht
geen nieuwe spectaculaire dingen. Ik vond 'God Save The Queen' zeker geen
slecht boek, maar ook niet geweldig. 

Omwille van alle bovenstaande argumenten, geef ik het boek 'God Save The
Queen' drie sterren op vijf.

I was very willing to read "All Things Georgian" and luckily the book was available
as eBook on the Kobo reader. 

As a royal history lover, I really enjoyed the book very much. It was written very
 fluently in clear chapters and chronological as well (which is important for me).

There were stories about known and less-known people. I also liked the old pictures
in the book from inter alia London. 

So, don't hesitate to buy and to read this excellent book! I give it a 5 star rating
because due to interesting people and subjects, the layout of the book and their

fantastic writing style.

Joanne Major and Sarah Murden are two genealogists and great historians.

Review

Every year, I like to travel to Spain. This country has lots of sunshine, food, drinks and history as well. Unfortunately in 2020, we will not travel to this wonderful country. So, I decided to read a book about the Spanish history. I was happy that I made this splendid decision. Reading books about beautiful destinations is almost as good as traveling in my mind.

The writing style is nice and clear. It also is written very chronological which I really like in history books. The facts and the most important events are told in a pleasant way. 

Even though I know already much about the history of Spain, I still learned many things from this book: "Spain: A History". 

The Author

Malveena McKendrick is an amazing author and historian as well. She also wrote a book about Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. 

Conclusion

If you want to read more about the history of Spain, don't hesitate to buy this book or to read it on Kobo as I did. I give it a 5 star rating!

The review

"Under a skellig sky" is a nice story about green Ireland, its landscapes and its people. 

The book is written as the people speak in Ireland.

However "Under a skellig sky" is a very easy reading book. It also is a enjoyable story
so, I want to read more from this author. 

I give "Under a skellig sky" a 4 star rating (on 5).

Recensie: Tuinieren voor de geest

Recensie

Toen er in Knack Weekend een artikel verscheen over het boek "Tuinieren voor de geest" van de auteur Sue Stuart-Smith  wou ik het meteen kopen. Psychologie en tuinieren zijn immers twee onderwerpen die me ontzettend boeien. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Meestal laat ik dan een boek wat rijpen, maar deze keer besloot ik om het e-book direct te lezen. 

'Tuinieren voor de geest' stelde me niet teleur, integendeel! De auteur hield een warme oproep om iedereen aan het tuinieren te krijgen. Het stelde diepzinnige vragen en deed me verder nadenken, niet enkel over de tuin maar ook over het leven. 

Het boek is heel duidelijk en boeiend geschreven in klare hoofdstukken, verdeeld over de cycli der seizoenen, wat wel zorgde voor een super goede indeling.

Soms stellen non-fictie boeken me teleur, maar deze was echt een schot in de roos! Het is zeker een aanrader voor mensen die houden van tuinieren, geschiedenis én psychologie.

The Book

Althouth these kind of books aren't my normal reading genre, I really liked
it. "Man From Ireland" was easy reading and the characters were very good.
I certainly wanted to know the end of the book. 

So "Man From Ireland" certainly is a great-read.

The author: Michele G. Charrier has written other books too: The Race,
The Stone of Greed and Sfumato.

Four years ago, Glennon Doyle, author, activist and humanitarian, wife and mother of three—was speaking at a conference when a woman entered the room. Due to publicity on Facebook and other social media this book was recommended as a must-read. Even Adele was a big fan of it. So, I decided to buy the book. I read it in Dutch with the title
'Ongetemd leven'. 

It clearly is a beautiful memoir from the author herself and she wrote very honestly about her life. I liked that very much. I also admired the positive way she put things down on paper. 

However I started several times to try to read the book but too soon I stopped reading. Was it annoying? No, it wasn't just my cup of tea. 

I expected more of the book, but for the honest writing of the author, I would give her three stars on five. 

I read Untamed as an ebook, bought via bol.com.

En ook dus Napoleon - Inspiratie voor hedendaags management en leidinggeven. Dit boek werd uitgegeven door Uitgeverij Horizon in 2019. 

De andere boeken van Napoleon Bonaparte geschreven door Johan Op de Beeck waren telkens fantastisch om te lezen. Ik was dus echt benieuwd naar het boek over Napoleon, inspiratie voor hedendaags management en leidinggeven. 

Welke lessen uit de geschiedenis kunnen hedendaagse leidinggevenden trekken? Wat kan Napoleon Bonaparte hen leren? Is het leven van Napoleon wel te vergelijken met dat van de manager van nu? Dat wordt allemaal uitgelegd in het meeslepende boek.

Het boek is een must-read voor wie houdt van bedrijfspsychologie, management en geschiedenis. Ik vond het zelf een verrassende maar boeiende en fantastische combinatie.

Wellington against Junot

So, I was very happy that Kobo plus offers a series of books about General Wellington and the Portuguese invasion. This is a period during the reign of Napoleon which is less known for me. I read three books:

- Wellington against Junot

- Wellington against Soult

At the heart of David Butterys third book on the Peninsular War lies the comparison between two great commanders of enormous experience and reputation Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, and Jean de Dieu Soult. In Soult, Wellesley met one of his most formidable opponents and they confronted each other during one of the most remarkable, and neglected, of the Peninsular campaigns. Soults invasion of Portugal is rarely studied in great depth and, likewise, the offensive Wellesley launched, which defeated and expelled the French, has also received scant coverage. - Wellington against Massena

Wellington's clash with Massena was one of the most remarkable contests between two commanders in the Peninsular War. All the books are talking about the Invasion of Portugal in the Napoleonic Wars. They are published by Pen & Sword Books Ltd. 

Wellington shouldn't be introduced to the English readers of this blog and to the history lovers. But perhaps the Generals of Napoleon Bonaparte are less famous. Nevertheless these series are clearly written and very interesting to learn about the different invasions in Portugal. It is an excellent reading to know the people and even the spirit of the age. So it's very recommendable for royal history lovers.

The History of Portugal

The Story of Portugal possesses a peculiar interest from the fact that it is to its history alone that the country owes its existence as a separate nation Geographically, the little kingdom is an integral portion of the Iberian peninsula, with no natural boundaries to distinguish it from that larger portion of the peninsula called Spain; its inhabitants spring from the same stock as the Spaniards, and their language differs but slightly from the Spanish. Its early history is merged in that of the rest of the peninsula, and but for two great men, Affonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and John I., the founder of the house of Aviz, Portugal would not at the present day rank among the independent nations of Europe. The first of these monarchs created his dominions into a kingdom like Leon, Castile, and Aragon, and the latter encouraged the maritime explorations which gave the little country an individuality and national existence, of which it was justly proud. When Philip II. annexed Portugal in 1580, it was at least a century too late for the Portuguese to coalesce with the Spaniards. They had then produced Vasco da Gama and Alboquerque and other great captains and explorers, who had shown Europe the way to India by sea; and their tongue had been developed by the genius of Camoens and Sá de Miranda, from a Romance dialect, similar to those used in Gallicia, Castile, or Aragon, into a great literary language. Conscious of its national history, Portugal broke away again from Spain in 1640, and under the protection of England maintained its separate existence during the eighteenth century…

Portugal, a beautiful country in West Europe near the Atlantic Ocean always had interested me very much. Besides the lovely cities, the Algarve and the excellent port wine, Portugal has more assets for visitors. It really has an amazing (royal) history. That's why I chose to read 'The History of Portugal' via the Kobo reader of Bol.com.

The history of Portugal is clearly written by H.Morse Stephens. The book is divided in comprehensible chapters and it mentions all the big events in the history of the country. And of course it has a chapter about the great explorers of Portugal.

In my country, due to Covid-19, there is something as a staycation. With books as this one, though it is about history, I can make a virtual travel to one of the most beautiful countries in southern Europe ... 

I will use this book to study the interesting Portuguese (royal) history and it really is to recommend for anyone who is interested in history and the most important events in Portugal. 

Bookreview: De Doorzetster

Na zijn bijna-doodervaring bekeerde mijn man Roel zich tot de Rooms-katholieke kerk. Zelf bereidde ik mij voor op een pastorale functie. Dat liep anders. Na het overlijden van Roel kreeg ik een relatie met Peter, met wie ik ruim drie jaar geleden trouwde.

De coronacrisis betekent voor Peter en mij: 24/7 bij elkaar samen zijn in ons tweekamerappartement van een seniorencomplex. Ik ga alleen de deur uit om boodschappen te doen tijdens het ouderenuurtje. Peter blijft thuis, want hij is pas geopereerd. Wij krijgen geen bezoek. Toch hebben wij het samen gezellig en genieten wij van elkaar.

In 2016 trouwden Peter en ik. Hij was 81 en al 22 jaar weduwnaar. Ik was 64 en ruim acht jaar weduwe. Na een knipperlichtrelatie durfden wij het met elkaar aan. Het aan- en uitgaan kwam vooral door de angst om ons aan elkaar te binden. Elke liefde kent de pijn van het afscheid en dat wilden wij niet nog eens meemaken.

Roel was boekhouder, maar Peter had vroeger een seksshop en later optiekzaken. Aan boord van zijn motorjacht maakten Peter en ik een bootreis van drie maanden. Mijn boek over deze reis haalde de voorpagina van De Haarlemmer. Op de foto gaf Peter mij een zoen op de mond. Dat wekte de woede van mijn pastoor. Na de aanslag op de MH17 raakte Peter in een zware depressie. Onze liefde overwon steeds weer deze en andere problemen. Uiteindelijk gaven we elkaar ons jawoord.

 

Eerst en vooral: wat een prachtig boek waar de liefde van af spat!

‘De Doorzetster’ treft mij onmiddellijk omdat het veel - ook voor mij - herkenbare situaties weergeeft. Bovendien reikt het boek zeker inspiratie én moed aan.  De auteur schrijft openhartig en passioneel over haar leven. Het zijn stuk voor stuk verhalen en situaties die direct een lach en een traan oproepen.

De Doorzetster is absoluut niet saai. Het is op een vlotte, aangename, charmante en uiterst boeiende manier geschreven.

Omdat het over zo'n interessante en herkenbare onderwerpen en situaties gaat, wou ik het boek beslist in één ruk uitlezen. Ik ben ’s morgens begonnen en ik wou ’s avonds niet stoppen voor ik ‘De Doorzetster’ uitgelezen had.

Ik was ook onder de indruk van de uitgebreide bibliografie en van het aantal boeken dat de auteur reeds heeft geschreven. Ik hoop dat ze nog veel inspiratie vindt voor nieuw materiaal.

Tenslotte: ‘De Doorzetster’ is vast en zeker een aanrader voor al wie van diepgaande, waargebeurde non-fiction verhalen houdt.

Bijzondere ontmoeting

Ik heb Marianne een aantal jaar geleden op een Vorstendag (georganiseerd door het magazine Vorsten)  in Apeldoorn ontmoet bij een lezing van Paul Mosterd van de Hermitage in Amsterdam. We kwamen naast elkaar te zitten in een zaal in hotel De Keizerskroon. Ik was direct onder de indruk van haar gedrevenheid. Zij noteerde alles wat er gezegd werd in een kleine notablok, terwijl ik er wel van uit ging dat ik alles wel zou onthouden (niet dus). In ieder geval, we raakten aan de praat en via facebook bleven we contact houden. Ik voelde me erg vereerd toen ze vroeg of ik een recensie over haar nieuwe boek ‘De Doorzetster’ wou schrijven.
